Task 3: The Hidden Destination

Now that you know your location on the map. Let's say you want to head to a destination that you can't see, but is marked on your map. Perhaps you want to go to the cabin circled in red.

If the map has been moved since finding your location, realign the map to True North as outlined in Task 2. Regardless, it's still a good idea to check that it's aligned and hasn't been bumped.
Using the scale edge of the compass, or any long, straight edge, draw a line between your location and the cabin mark.

Now align the scale edge of the compass with the line you have just drawn. Using the scale edge, you can measure the distance to your destination. The scale is in meters. So, below, we can see our destination is about 3,850 meters. For reference: 1,600 meters is almost exactly a mile (1609.3 is exactly a mile).

With the compass still aligned and pointed from your location to the destination, read the azimuth and rotate the bezel until the indicator line aligns with the North arrow. You will now be following this bearing just as if you had sighted off your destination directly as in Task 1. Before starting on your journey however, it's a good idea to double check the map is still aligned, since otherwise your bearing will be erroneous.
